The Strange Engineering Outlaw Street Car Shootout season will come down to a pair of young guns this weekend at Cecil County Dragway, where Ty Kasper and “Quick” Nick Schroeder will battle for the Outlaw 10.5 championship in the series finale. It marks the end of Outlaw 10.5’s first season back at Cecil County since 2020.
Kasper enters the weekend with a five-point lead over Schroeder after the two drivers split the first four races of the season. Schroeder won the opening two events before Kasper answered with victories in the last two, setting up a winner-take-all type of showdown with $5,000 on the line for the event victory.
For Kasper, a Drag Illustrated 30 Under 30 Class of 2022 honoree and multi-time PDRA Pro Street winner, the championship would carry added significance. His father, Tom, and older brother, TJ, both raced Outlaw 10.5 at Cecil County and have championships of their own in the class.
“I’m very excited for this championship, as this will be my first championship if I get it,” Kasper said. “Also, my dad and brother have won a championship here in 10.5, so if all three of us can have one, that’ll be awesome.”
Schroeder brings his own family history to the matchup. The 2021 DI 30 Under 30 honoree is the son of former Outlaw 10.5 racer Joe Schroeder and has already built an impressive résumé of his own, highlighted by his victory in the Pro 10.5 Challenge at the 2024 Drag Illustrated World Series of Pro Mod.
That shared history has added another layer to a championship race between two drivers who grew up around the class.
“Having two young guys is definitely cool being we both practically grew up watching our dads race against each other at Cecil, so for one of us to win the championship will be awesome,” Schroeder said.
The competition has been just as tight on the track. At the most recent race, both Kasper and Schroeder recorded .000 reaction times as they continued trading blows in the points battle.
“It’s been a very fun time battling it out with Ty,” Schroeder said. “He’s a great racer and they have a great program. It’s funny, we both try to kill each other on the starting line with both of us having .000 lights at the last race.”
Kasper sees the matchup as a fitting way to close out the season.
“It’s great having the young guns in there like myself,” Kasper said. “They are the next generation of the sport. To start the new 10.5 series with me and Nick battling it out for No. 1 and it coming down to the last race is pretty sweet. It just shows you the commitment and dedication we’ve put into the cars throughout the season.”
With only five points separating the two, neither driver has much margin for error.
“To hold Nick off won’t be easy,” Kasper said. “He’s a talented driver and knows what it takes to win, just as do I. I have to stay ahead of him the whole race. With winning the past two races here, I have confidence in my car and team to handle business. I just have to do my job and stay consistent and hope to come out in the No. 1 spot.”
Schroeder views the finale in similarly simple terms.
“It’s going to take consistent, fast runs to win this thing,” Schroeder said. “I lost my lead, so I’m five points out of first, so it’s basically sudden death. Regardless, we go to have fun and enjoy time with family and friends, so I’ll be happy either way.”
Outlaw 10.5 will headline a full Strange Engineering Outlaw Street Car Shootout program that also includes Pro 275, Limited Drag Radial, Ultra Street, Top Sportsman, 8.50 Index, Pro Street, Super Street, 10.00 Index and 11.50 Index.
