Tony Schumacher Ready to Chase 11th U.S. Nationals Title at Indianapolis

Tony Schumacher, the most decorated driver in the history of the U.S. Nationals, is set to return to Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park this weekend, driving the Leatherwood Distillery Top Fuel Dragster in pursuit of an unprecedented 11th victory at the iconic event.

As the winningest driver in U.S. Nationals history, Schumacher’s record includes ten victories (2000, 2002-2004, 2006-2009, 2012, 2016), two runner-up finishes (1996, 2005), and four No. 1 qualifying positions (2005-2007, 2014). His legacy at this track began with his Top Alcohol Funny Car debut in 1995, followed by a final-round appearance during his Top Fuel debut in 1996, marking the start of a storied career. The 2023 edition saw Schumacher qualify 12th, with a first-round exit after a fierce battle against Mike Salinas.

Coming off a challenging event in Brainerd, where he qualified 13th and faced a first-round defeat by Tony Stewart, Schumacher is focused on capitalizing on his strong testing performance leading into the U.S. Nationals. With one national event win, two runner-up finishes, and a Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge victory already in 2024, he aims to add another prestigious Indy trophy to his collection.

Reflecting on his past successes and the significance of racing at Indianapolis, Schumacher remarked, “Every time we arrive in Indy, it feels like I’m coming home. It’s the first place I got to race a Top Fueler, back in ’96, and has been amazing to me ever since. We tested very well last week and are looking forward to a tough but fantastic weekend.”

As the NHRA regular season nears its conclusion, Schumacher is keenly aware of the importance of points in this critical stretch. “Of course, everyone has their eyes on the points right now. We have the opportunity to move up a spot or two this weekend, but it’ll be what it’ll be. It’s fun to sit back and look at the points and evaluate where you might possibly end up, but evaluating and guessing never really turns out the way you expect. It doesn’t matter what you think is going to happen. All that matters is where you end up. You can’t get happy or mad about it because your performance during the year has led you to being in that spot. I’ve been 330 points in the lead before going into the Countdown, but at that point, everything is reset anyways, and you’ve got to ‘cowboy up’ and charge hard for the next six races. That’s what makes a champion.”

As Schumacher prepares to take on the best in the world at the U.S. Nationals, fans and competitors alike will be watching closely to see if he can add yet another chapter to his unparalleled legacy at Indianapolis.
