The logo for the Cornwell Tools Night Under Fire includes the trademarked tagline “The Greatest Show in Drag Racing.” The 49th version of Summit Motorsports Park’s showcase event certainly lived up to that billing. A near-capacity crowd of nearly 40,000 fans was entertained by jets, wheelstanders, gassers, mountain motor pro stocks, and more. A new concept pitting a funny car against a top fueler was introduced, named “The King of Nitro,” and was dominated by Ron Capps Motorsports. Don’t forget the fireworks! Ron Capps defeated teammate Maddie Gordon 3.843/333.91 to Gordon’s 3.733/338.09 to win the first King of Nitro crown.
Gordon took out low qualifier Doug Kalitta with a 3.723 best the top fuel field and faced Capps in the final.
John Force was honored as Grand Marshall of the event.
Shawn Langdon took the opportunity to test. He ran a best of 3.83/318.47.
In an Ohio vs. Michigan battle in Top Alcohol Dragster, Cory Mihalek emerged victorious over JP Gutierrez.
Ray Kasicki laid down this 660′ smoker to win the Scott Rods burnout contest.
Local racer Keith Castle took the R&R Auto Body top sportsman Invitational over Ronnie Proctor.
Doug Kalitta was low qualifier in Top Fuel at 3.757.
The “King” is crowned!
The Mountain Motor Pro Stocks ran for a $100,000 purse. Alan Drinkwater defeated John DeFlorian on a holeshot in the final.
Hayden Proffitt’s twin-engine jet truck put a hurt on the big wall.
As always, the night concluded with a fabulous fireworks display.
