Mickey Thompson, a name synonymous with raw speed and mechanical innovation, carved a niche so deep in the world of drag racing that his influence ripples through the sport to this day. The brand that now bears his name, Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels, seeks to continue Thompson’s legacy through its ever-evolving tires and wheels for enthusiasts in numerous corners of the automotive world.
Born Marion Lee Thompson on December 7, 1928, in Alhambra, California, Mickey Thompson entered the world of auto racing in the late 1940s. It wasn’t long before he made his mark, not just as a talented driver but also as an inventive engineer. By the 1950s, Thompson was setting the drag racing world alight, breaking speed record after speed record, eventually earning the nickname “The Speed King.”
Thompson’s approach to changing the sport’s technology and tactics was not confined to mere incremental improvements. Instead, he sought transformative changes that reshaped the landscape of drag racing.
Thompson is credited with crafting the first front-engine “slingshot” dragster, where the driver sat behind the rear axle, drastically lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity and improving traction. This innovation not only enhanced performance but also safety, as it provided better handling at high speeds. The design was soon adopted by others, cementing its place as a staple in drag racing.
But Thompson didn’t stop there. His relentless pursuit of speed led him to explore various engine configurations and innovations. He was among the first to experiment with superchargers and nitromethane fuel, pushing the boundaries of what was mechanically and physically possible on the quarter-mile strip.
Perhaps one of Thompson’s most audacious endeavors was the creation of the Challenger I, a car designed for the sole purpose of breaking the world land speed record. In 1960, at the Bonneville Salt Flats, he set a new record, achieving a speed of 406.60 mph, making him the first American to break the 400-mph barrier on land. This accomplishment was not directly linked to drag racing, yet it showcased the extent of Thompson’s ambition and technical prowess, traits that permeated his drag racing career.
Throughout the 1960s, Thompson’s presence in the drag racing community grew, not only through his racing endeavors but also through his contributions to automotive design and safety. He pioneered the use of aluminum and fiberglass in the construction of racing cars, significantly reducing weight and, by extension, increasing speed. His interest in safety also led him to design various protective features for cars and drivers, anticipating modern safety measures long before they became standard.
In 1963, he founded Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels, an enterprise devoted to developing high-performance tires capable of meeting the demands of extreme speed. At first, the company produced tires specifically for his Indianapolis 500 cars and NHRA Super Stock competitors. Mickey Thompson tires quickly gained traction with teenagers who put them on their muscle cars. Thompson’s interest in off-road racing led to tire lines for the off-road market. The U.S. Navy even relied on Mickey Thompson off-road tires for their for their SEAL Fast Attack Vehicles during the Gulf War.
Thompson’s early fascination with drag racing shines through today in the company’s robust line of front and rear tires for a variety of drag racing applications, including heads-up big-tire and small-tire racing, bracket racing, motorcycle drag racing, and even Jr. Dragster racing. The ET Drag line of slicks is engineered for maximum traction and consistent E.T.s for nearly every drag racing application. The ET Street Radial lines helped revolutionize the world of drag radial racing, setting records in Radial vs. the World, Pro 275, X275, and multiple other small-tire classes. The Pro Bracket Radial line similarly offers consistency for bracket racers.
