Jeff Lutz Shares Emotional Update After Fiery Wrong-Way Crash in Race Rig

Drag racing star and Street Outlaws standout Jeff Lutz is counting his blessings after a terrifying early-morning crash destroyed his race rig on Interstate 90.

According to Idaho State Police, a 62-year-old Spokane Valley man was driving a Dodge Caravan the wrong way in the westbound lanes near Post Falls around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, August 14. The Caravan sideswiped Lutz’s semi-truck and trailer, rupturing a fuel tank and sparking a fire that engulfed the hauler. Lutz, his wife Christine, their son Jeffrey, and the family dog all managed to escape with only minor injuries.

Lutz, who was en route to Qlispe Raceway Park in Washington for the latest stop on The Outlaws tour event, took to social media Friday to share an emotional video update with fans.

“We lost our phones, our wallets, everything in the fire. The toter home is a total loss, the trailer’s not much better,” Lutz said. “To lose everything to a drunk driver is devastating to me. But we’re okay, and that’s what matters.”

He described the moments immediately after the impact as harrowing.

“I didn’t think I was going to get Jeffrey and Chris and the dog out because it was so on fire. My life flashed before my eyes,” he recalled. “We’re in survival mode now.”

Despite the devastation, Lutz expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the racing community.

“I can’t thank everybody enough. The overwhelming support and love that y’all have – we love each and every one of ya,” he said.

The veteran racer confirmed he will not compete this weekend or next, instead focusing on getting his damaged rig back home to Pennsylvania and regrouping with his family.

“I worked all my life to have this – 20-some years of racing – and to see it go up in flames because of a drunk driver is insane. I just want to go home,” Lutz said.

While insurance is expected to cover much of the damage, Lutz admitted the emotional toll is significant. He apologized to fans in Spokane and Canada, where he was scheduled to race, but said getting behind the wheel again will take time.

The crash remains under investigation by Idaho State Police.
