The drag racing community mourns the loss of veteran racer and drag racing fixture Michael Bartone, who passed away on Friday, March 14. The Bartone Bros. Racing Facebook page shared Michael’s passing with a statement on March 15.
Known for his competitive spirit and compassionate personality, Bartone left an indelible mark on the sport, celebrated both on and off the track.
A familiar and beloved figure at drag strips across the nation, Bartone notably claimed victory in the Top Alcohol Dragster category at the prestigious 1995 U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis, marking one of the highlights of his distinguished racing career. His passion extended to Nostalgia racing as well, where he successfully campaigned a Camaro Nostalgia Funny Car.
Alongside his brother Tony, Michael played a pivotal role in reigniting the Bartone family’s racing legacy, competing in Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragster events. Together, the Bartone brothers earned multiple championships, quickly becoming dominant forces in the category.
Beyond racing, Michael was known for his infectious enthusiasm, whether discussing big-block V8 engines, riding his motorcycle, or simply sharing stories with friends and fellow competitors. His presence at the track was synonymous with camaraderie, always eager to celebrate the thrill and fellowship that racing provided.
As Michael Bartone takes his final pass, he will be fondly remembered for his winning ways, vibrant personality, and deep love for speed.
