Andy Robinson has once again written his name into the history books of British drag racing, securing his 10th Motorsport UK Drag Racing Championship at the National Finals, Santa Pod Raceway. Driving his roots blown, clutch-equipped 1969 Camaro known as ‘Anger Management’, Robinson scored his second victory of the season to gain the championship win.
This landmark achievement came in the final round of the final event of the FuelTech/Motorsport UK British Drag Racing Championship (the series for Pro Modified cars in the UK), where the Robinson Race Cars team faced Jon Webster in the Fast Company twin turbo Mustang in a nail-biting winner takes all race.
Going into the final event both drivers were tied in points, therefore whichever team won the most elimination rounds would become the championship victor. The pressure was therefore firmly on at Santa Pod.
Robinson became number 1 qualifier with a career best 5.811 at 247.70 mph and recorded a 5.851 at 249.49 mph in the semifinals to gain lane choice. In the finals, Webster got an early lead with a 0.07 reaction time compared to Robinson’s 0.09, but Robinson caught up and took the stripe with a 5.91 vs Webster’s 5.95. The margin of victory was 0.0098 or 3.5 feet; neither driver could call it at the top end of the track.
“To win a 10th Motorsport UK Pro Modified Championship is an incredible feeling,” said Robsinson. “This year has been the toughest yet! We’ve had to fight hard all year and never stopped pushing. This championship belongs to the whole team.”
This season has been one of the strongest in the Robinson Race Cars team’s history, as well as the busiest. The team contested 11 events, two of which were Outlaw, no rules-style, which the team came second in both. Three events were in the Carl Cox Motorsport FIVE90 championship where the team placed a strong fourth against entrants from all corners of the world. The remaining six were MSUK Pro Modified rounds, where the team scored two wins and two runner-up positions.
