The premier gasser organization in the drag racing world, the Southeast Gassers Association, is ready to return to its roots at Greer Dragway. The Return, presented by MAHLE Motorsports, takes place September 11-12. It’s race seven of the SEGA Championship season and the last stop on a Carolina swing that began in Rockingham, North Carolina, rolled on through Farmington in the same state, and now concludes in Greer, South Carolina. The revolutions will be high, gears four, and wheels in the air with the Southeast Gassers Association at a track, Greer Dragway, that is at the very roots of SEGA’s existence.
Greer Dragway and the Southeast Gassers Association organization date back to the very root tip of SEGA’s existence. Even with that importance, it has been ten years since SEGA last raced at the historic Upstate South Carolina drag racing facility. Since that time, Greer Dragway has continued to operate and, under the ownership of Mike Greer, has advanced as a facility with significant grounds and infrastructure improvements. For SEGA, it continued to lead the way in nostalgia gasser drag racing, building its brand to the point where it’s one of the most recognizable brands in drag racing and not just the nostalgia variety. Now, in 2026, this combination comes together again to hold a championship race that had been whispered to never happen again and heralded as a must for SEGA, Greer Dragway, and ultimately the fan.
Over the course of a decade, many changes can occur for any organization. SEGA is no different; how it looks in 2026 is different from what it did in 2016, while maintaining the pursuit of delivering gasser drag racing that represents the mid-1960s as close as possible in the modern day. Even with all the changes, it’s great to see that some of the same faces from that final SEGA race at Greer Dragway in 2016 are still here. One, representing his own departure yet return. The other, an unwavering commitment to pursue SEGA glory.
In 2026, Greg Porter returned to SEGA competition in the A/Gas category. His famed Night Stalker 1955 Chevrolet, along with his wife, Cassandra Porter, is a well-known package in the nostalgia scene. That popularity isn’t just a matter of a well-executed theme but also of success on the track from Bakersfield to Greer itself. Greg was a finalist in A/Gas ten years ago in SEGA competition – he’s looking to do just that, make a final before his hometown crowd at the strip just down the road from his Highway 123 Speed Shop. The other is SEGA’s Ironman, Ernie Smith, who was also a finalist at the last race for SEGA at Greer Dragway. Not only was he a finalist, but he was also the final one to turn on the win-light in C/Gas that day. This time in his Saturday Night Special Chevy II, with well over one hundred SEGA starts, he’s hungry for another win, not tasting victory since that November day at Greer Dragway in 2016.
The Return presented by MAHLE Motorsports will ignite its action on Friday at 6 p.m. Eastern with a SEGA-only test and tune ($20 admission). Saturday has qualifying scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern, with championship eliminations to follow ($25 admission – $35 weekend pass – nothing on track till qualifying). Southeast Gassers Association competition will showcase heads-up, first to the finish line eliminations, representing an authentic 1960s gasser racing experience.
