In fact, the first race ever held was credited to West Maitland, New South Wales, and Australia in November of 1923. In 1975, some fifty-four years after the beginning of speedway motorcycle racing, a group of inventive Americans took these brakeless, gearless, and simplest of all hybrid-racing machines indoors to compete on ice. Also in 1975, indoor ice racing competitions were being held using 250cc flat track bikes as the primary machines. A Michigan gentleman named Staten Lorenz was credited with starting this form of ice racing. A Safety Rule eventually prohibited ‘Locked differentials’ on those cars. On rear-engine dragsters, the Slicks are much closer together than the Slingshots. Even so, one can often see a car veering one way or the other. The chance of correction and recovery is greatly aided by the long wheelbase which helps to maintain the desired geometric angle of forward thrust in lieu of catastrophic diversion therefrom. Most accidents on the drag strip involve unequal traction. When a vehicle crosses up, that is not going to be a good pass, even if the driver regains control. While it is understood that in some instances a Spool is necessary to handle the power, Locked Rear-ends are an Old-school carryover from the early days when they were necessitated by the factory suspension. The drag strip is not the place to entertain spectators with vehicles out of control and at times resulting in serious consequences.”

——————————————————————————————–

52) 100 Years of Legends: The Official Celebration of the Le Mans 24-Hours, the drivers: the greats, topped by nine-time winner Tom Kristensen; the rookie winners; pioneering female drivers; tales of exceptional personal endeavor and adversity.
