There may be no better way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of historic Route 66 than with the return of Edelbrock Sick 66, as 200 of America\u2019s quickest street cars prepare to tackle one of the most ambitious drag-and-drive events in the country.<\/p>\n

From September 26 through October 3, competitors will race and road-trip their way along Route 66, combining six days of drag racing with more than 1,400 miles of highway driving through the heart of America.<\/p>\n

Racers will compete at Mo-Kan Dragway, Bonne Terre Drag Strip, and Midstate Dragway, with each venue appearing twice on the schedule as the field travels east from Joplin, Missouri, toward Joliet, Illinois, before turning around and heading back west. Participants will set elapsed times at every stop, with the lowest average over the week determining the winners.<\/p>\n

But Edelbrock Sick 66 is about much more than racing.<\/p>\n

Daily routes are designed to follow historic Route 66 as closely as possible, including visits to iconic landmarks, original sections of the Mother Road, and unique roadside attractions that celebrate a century of America\u2019s most famous highway.<\/p>\n

Fans can expect to see an incredible mix of machinery, from 1000-horsepower street cars to a crowd-favorite field of street-legal gassers known for burnouts, dry hops, wheelstands, and old-school style. Special attractions will include the famous Hoonigan Camaro and What No Way Guy\u2019s Family Truckster, adding even more entertainment to the week.<\/p>\n

Unlike traditional race events, there are no transporters at Edelbrock Sick 66. Every competitor\u00a0<\/p>\n

drives their race car between tracks, creating an atmosphere where spectators can walk through the pits, meet drivers, and experience what it takes to survive a week-long drag-and-drive challenge.<\/p>\n

Racing begins at approximately 9 a.m. each day, with competitors typically heading back onto the road shortly after lunch. Some drive days will exceed 300 miles, testing not only performance but reliability and determination.<\/p>\n

The event also includes the Sick Ward, a non-competitive cruising group for enthusiasts who want to experience the route, enjoy the camaraderie, and watch the racing without taking their own vehicle down the drag strip.<\/p>\n

Among those eagerly anticipating the adventure is veteran competitor Kevin Lowery, who will campaign his supercharged 1957 Chevrolet 210 alongside his wife, Cassie.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going because we love the history behind it and the sights to see,\u201d Lowery said. \u201cWe completed the first Edelbrock Sick 66 and it was so much fun. The route stops and tracks were amazing, along with the people. Being the 100-year anniversary of Route 66, that is special all in itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taking a high-powered classic car on a six-day, 1,400-mile journey is never easy, but Lowery embraces the challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest challenge will be to not have to take the supercharger off of the car for major repairs!\u201d he laughed. \u201cThis year we have blown piston rings apart and even had to swap cams and lifters at the track. It has been tough for my wife Cassie and I, but we always try to have fun with the folks around us, even if we are thrashing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom Bailey, founder of Sick The Magazine and the driving force behind the event, believes this year\u2019s edition will be one of the most memorable yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cEdelbrock Sick 66 is going to be an adventure like no other for Route 66\u2019s 100th anniversary,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cCombine that with America\u2019s 250th anniversary celebrations, and what better way to make memories than driving Route 66 with a group of awesome racers?<\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t an event to watch from the couch. It\u2019s an event to participate in. Grab a Sick Ward cruising ticket and bring any car along for the journey. It\u2019s going to be epic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spectator tickets are available for $30 online or $35 at the gate, with children aged 12 and under admitted free.<\/p>\n

For racers, cruisers, and fans alike, Edelbrock Sick 66 promises to be a celebration of horsepower, road trips, and the enduring spirit of Route 66 unlike anything else on the automotive calendar.<\/p>\n
