Fresh off a PDRA ProStars win on Thursday night, reigning PDRA Pro Boost world champion Ty Tutterow continues to be an unstoppable force in qualifying, taking the top spot on Friday night in what could potentially be his fourth consecutive No. 1 qualifier. Driving Justin Smith\u2019s screw-blown\u00a0Quik Fuel \u201968 Camaro, Tutterow uncorked a 3.560 at 209.69 mph, nearly two hundredths quicker than his closest competitor.<\/p>\n
Tutterow admitted that running in the final pair of the session, following an unfortunate incident involving John Doc suffering parts failure and hitting the wall multiple times in his \u201969 \u201cCow-maro,\u201d actually benefitted him, as it allowed his team to make adjustments as conditions improved. John Doc, meanwhile, appeared to be okay following the crash, but was transported to a nearby medical facility as a cautionary measure.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter that unfortunate incident with those guys, the track did get better,\u201d said Tutterow. \u201cThey prepped the track. We ended up making a weight swing right before that run and it helped. That\u2019s probably the best run this car\u2019s ever made as far as an A-to-B smooth pass. I mean, it was a flawless run.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
With just one more qualifying session remaining on Saturday morning, and conditions not likely to be better than Friday night, Tutterow is also close to earning the qualifying bonus points in his quest to catch Johnny Camp and Jason Harris and repeat as series champion.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope the weather\u2019s bad, or at least warm enough where nobody can better it,\u201d Tutterow said. I mean, if the weather\u2019s there and we can better it, we\u2019re gonna try to better our run. I know it\u2019s forecasted to be cooler tomorrow than it has been all weekend, so we\u2019ll just see how the cards fall.\u201d<\/p>\n
Danville, Virginia\u2019s Randy Weatherford claimed the No. 2 spot on Friday night, running 3.577 seconds at 209.46 mph in his Harts Charger-equipped WS Construction \u201969 Camaro. Jason Harris, seeking to become the very first five-time PDRA world champion, qualified third with a 3.593 at 210.80 in his Harts Charger-boosted \u201cParty Time\u201d \u201969 Camaro.\u00a0<\/p>\n
PRO NITROUS<\/strong><\/p>\n 2024 Elite Top Sportsman championship runner-up Tim Paap came out swinging in the cool evening qualifying session of Pro Nitrous on Friday night. After struggling in Q1, Paap ran in the second pair of Q2, laying down an impressive 3.621 at 207.46 mph in his Killin\u2019 Time Racing Paap Auto Body \u201916 Corvette. Unlike Tutterow, Paap did not make any changes to his car during the downtime following John Doc\u2019s unfortunate crash.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cNo, not at all,\u201d said Paap. \u201cIt was the same tune-up that was in it when we rolled up. Barker (tuner Jeffrey Barker) didn\u2019t make any changes at all. He\u2019s the man.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Despite the stellar run that put him No. 1 by five hundredths at the time, with a plethora of heavy hitters behind him, Paap wasn\u2019t confident the run would hold until the final pair of Tommy Franklin and Amber Denton went down the track.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t really know, because in Pro Nitrous, there\u2019s some tough competition in there,\u201d Paap said. \u201cUsually there\u2019s always a whole bunch of groupings of about four of us that are always together real close. You just never know until the whole field runs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n With no championship hopes for the weekend, Paap is looking forward to playing the spoiler role and making things awkward for the contenders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cOh, I\u2019d love to do that, most definitely. Spoilers always make things more exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n After winning the PDRA ProStars all-star race on Thursday night, Amber Denton carried her momentum into qualifying, taking the No. 2 spot with a 3.630 at 208.26 mph in her\u00a0Pat\u00a0Musi-assisted \u201cOG Jungle Rat\u201d\u00a0\u201869 Camaro. Virginia\u2019s Billy Albert holds the provisional No. 3 position with a 3.652 at 206.95 in his Albert Racing Engines-powered \u201920 Camaro.<\/p>\n PRO STREET<\/strong><\/p>\n Longtime 10.5 racer Jerry Morgano shot from the bottom of the Pro Street qualifying sheet all the way to the top on Friday, unloading a 3.907 at 202.67 mph in the very first pass of Friday night\u2019s second session in his twin-turbo \u201cCopperhead\u201d \u201902 Mustang. After a rough first pass earlier in the day, Friday night\u2019s run exceeded even Morgano\u2019s expectations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI thought it would be a good run, but I didn\u2019t think it would run a .90,\u201d said Morgano. \u201cComing up under the tower, my crew guy came and said that they were gonna prep, which they normally do for us \u2013 but they don\u2019t typically spray. When they brought the sprayer out, he said to me, \u2018Well, they\u2019re gonna spray, so the track should be pretty damn good.\u2019 I went 3.95 against Blake [Denton] last night, so I basically put that tune-up in it. I pulled a little timing out early on, and we picked up two numbers in the 60-foot, From there, the track was killer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Being the first pair out, going No. 1 was just the first part of the equation. From there, Morgano had to wait out the entire session to see if one of the many top contenders would outrun him. To his surprise, no one did.<\/p>\n \u201cNo, I didn\u2019t think it would hold number one,\u201d Morgano admitted. \u201cI was the first pair down. It gives all the guys behind me the data that the track will take a .90. There were a lot of killer cars that were in the rest of the field. I thought for sure more than one person would go faster than I ran, so I was happy it held.\u201d<\/p>\n If Morgano\u2019s number holds through tomorrow\u2019s final qualifying session, he\u2019ll earn some much-needed bonus to help keep his slim chances of a Pro Street points championship alive headed into eliminations. While he realizes the possibility is still there, it\u2019s not his main focus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cHonestly, you just take one round at a time,\u201d said Morgano. \u201cI know that\u2019s the clich\u00e9 everybody says, but it\u2019s a long shot for me to win. There\u2019s some phenomenal teams in front of me. Blake going out first round could happen, but it\u2019s unlikely. If he doesn\u2019t go out first round, then I can\u2019t win the championship. They\u2019re a great team, so I\u2019d be hard pressed to think he would go out round one. But even if he does, with [Scott] Kincaid and [Richard] Reagan and Joel [Wensley Jr.] and Ron [Green], if any of them make it to the semi\u2019s, even if I win the race, it doesn\u2019t matter. For me, I just enjoy coming out here with my guys and having a good weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n Championship hopeful Richard Reagan drove his\u00a0screw-blown \u201991 Mustang\u00a0to the No. 2 qualifying position, running a 3.920 at 196.19 mph.\u00a0Driving the Pat Musi-powered, nitrous-assisted \u201cBonnie\u201d \u201869 Camaro, Thursday night\u2019s ProStars winner and current points leader Blake Denton went 3.933 at 194.72 to qualify third.<\/p>\n PRO 632<\/strong><\/p>\n Points leader J.C. Beattie Jr. continued his march towards a seemingly inevitable Pro 632 world championship on Friday, running a 4.108 at 174.14 mph in the heat of the day to take the provisional No. 1 spot in his\u00a0nitrous-fed ATI Performance Products \u201918 Camaro. Sitting in the back of the line for Q2 Friday evening, Beattie Jr. watched as nobody could come within four hundredths of him, and elected to push his car off and not make another pass.<\/p>\n Jeff Pittman, sitting second in points, is also second on the qualifying chart, posting a 4.141 at 171.14 mph in his Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales \u201968 Chevelle. Young gun Carson Hoyle qualified third with a 4.163 at 169.44 in his ATI Performance Products \u201969 Camaro.<\/p>\n Ryan Altman, Thursday night\u2019s PDRA ProStars winner and finalist in the last two events, sits just outside the bump spot with one qualifying session remaining.\u00a0<\/p>\n SUPER STREET<\/strong><\/p>\n Reigning Super Street world champion Connor McGee kept his hopes of a championship repeat alive on Friday night, taking the provisional No. 1 qualifier and inching closer to the bonus points awarded with it. McGee fired off a 4.504 at 161.00 mph in Friday\u2019s evening session in his Fulton-powered Brian\u2019s Heating & Cooling \u201990 Mustang.<\/p>\n McGee will still need help, however, as current points leader and winner of the two most recent events, Austin Vincent, sits right behind him in the No. 2 position by just one hundredth of a second, running a 4.514 at 161.48 mph in his\u00a0Vincent Performance \u201988 Mustang. Amelia, Virginia\u2019s Troy Hill, looking to reach his third consecutive final round, is currently qualified third with a 4.576 at 159.48 in his black \u201900 Mustang.<\/p>\n TOP SPORTSMAN<\/strong><\/p>\n Bruce Thrift secured the provisional No. 1 spot in Elite Top Sportsman on Friday night, piloting his nitrous-assisted \u201cColor Me Gone\u201d \u201906 GTO to a 3.798 elapsed time at 196.90 mph. Jamie Fowler is second with a 3.809 at 198.44 in his nitrous-assisted, Fulton-powered Pee Dee Fleet \u201969 Camaro. Randy Perkinson sits third in his centrifugally supercharged \u201969 Camaro with a 3.809 at 194.30.\u00a0<\/p>\n John Benoit is just outside the 16-car Elite field with his 4.060 at 180.04, but that run currently places him and his Vermont-based \u201915 Corvette in the top spot of the Top Sportsman 48 field.\u00a0<\/p>\n TOP DRAGSTER<\/strong><\/p>\n Asheville, North Carolina\u2019s Tony Careccia continued his string of impressive performances in his brand-new screw-blown \u201926 NexGen dragster, claiming the provisional No. 1 spot in Elite Top Dragster with a 3.663-second run at 204.35 mph.\u00a02025 world champion\u00a0Alan O\u2019Brien laid down a 3.687 at 208.62 in his unique quad-turbocharged, AMC-powered Greenbrier Excavating & Paving \u201923 Racetech dragster to qualify second. Sitting in third is Carson, Virginia\u2019s Brian Anderson, who ran a 3.713 at 198.55.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Linzie Coleman, the 2025 PDRA World Finals event champion in Elite Top Dragster, sits just outside the top 16, which means she is currently the No. 1 qualifier in Top Dragster 48 with 3.839 at 194.38 mph.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Jr. Dragster and sportsman qualifying will continue Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Pro classes will wrap up qualifying immediately following the sportsman classes. The first Night of Fire thrill show is set for 6 p.m., followed by the first round of eliminations in the pro classes.
