IHRA Pro Mod points leader Jason Harris took his Harts-Charger equipped \u201cParty Time\u201d \u201969 Camaro to the winner\u2019s circle for the first time this season at the IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series Spring Nationals at Darana \u2013 National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio. Harris defeated Jason Lee in the final round after Lee turned on the red light \u2013 a common occurrence for opponents facing Harris throughout eliminations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been in the finals, and I\u2019ve screwed up a bunch,\u201d Harris said after the win, thanking his sponsors: Southern Diamond Company,\u00a0ProLine, Harts Charger, TKM, Hoosier, M&M Transmission, Alliance Racewear, and LAT Oil. \u201cI gotta thank my crew. When you got a car like this, it\u2019s your job to screw up, and I was there all day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite not scoring an event win in the first two IHRA races of the year, Harris has displayed strong performances all season, including wins at the Snowbird Outlaw Nationals at Bradenton Motorsports Park in December and the PDRA East Coast Nationals at Darana Motorsports Park \u2013 Dunn in April. He continued that trend with a No. 1 qualifying effort in Hebron, running a 3.601 at 210.08 mph to earn a first-round bye in the 13-car field.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite the bye run, Harris didn\u2019t take it easy, laying down a 3.600 at 209.50 mph, giving him lane choice in the second round against Drag Illustrated Winter Series points champion and winner of the IHRA season opener, Peter Norton. In what became the theme of the day, Norton went red, throwing away a 3.629-second pass. Harris, meanwhile, set low e.t. of the entire weekend with a 3.595 at 208.62.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Harris received a bit of luck in the semifinals, where he lined up against Greg Blevins. While Harris ran a stout 3.605 at 209.40 mph, Blevins threw away an even quicker 3.600 by the slimmest of margins \u2013 he turned on the red light by a miniscule -.0008.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the other side of the ladder, Jason Lee qualified No. 6 with a 3.624 at 209.21 mph. He remained in the mid- to low-3.60\u2019s throughout eliminations, defeating Jacob McNeal, the most recent IHRA event winner Tony Wilson, and Kye Kelley en route to the finals.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

As was the case with every single driver that faced Harris on race day, Lee left too soon, turning on the red light. Lee clicked off his ProCharger-equipped, Coast Packing Company \u201969 Camaro early as\u00a0Harris ran a 3.686 at 200.27 mph for the win.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Jason was definitely gonna win the final,\u201d joked Harris. \u201cJason Lee and them are great guys. I love racing them, been around them a long time. Everybody we ran today are great competitors. You just gotta do your thing and be up on the wheel.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The IHRA Spring Nationals win was extra special for a variety of reasons for Harris. In addition to being Mother\u2019s Day weekend, Harris and his wife, Crystal, were celebrating their 22nd wedding anniversary, as well as mourning the loss of a close family member.<\/p>\n

\u201cI lost my mother-in-law about a week ago,\u201d Harris said, visibly emotional. \u201cThis is for her. This one\u2019s special.\u201d<\/p>\n
