Locking down the 138th No. 1 qualifying start of his career driving the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro, Anderson tied Pro Stock pioneer Warren Johnson for the most all time in the class.

\u201cIt\u2019s pretty cool when you can tie Warren\u2019s records,\u201d said Anderson with a nod to his former employer\u2019s successes. In 2021 he first tied, then broke Johnson\u2019s record of 97 wins, the most ever by a driver in Pro Stock. Win 97 came for Anderson in Reading, Pa., and he emerged as the most winning when he powered to the win in Dallas just three races later. Entering U.S. Nationals eliminations, Anderson has 111 national event wins. He is No. 2 on NHRA\u2019s all-time win list behind only Funny Car legend John Force.

The tying pole in Indianapolis is the sixth No. 1 of the season for the reigning and six-time world champion, putting an exclamation point on a fruitful set of qualifying sessions.

\u201cI said it from the first day of the race, we\u2019re on a mission here, we want to have a stellar weekend in honor of Ken Black,\u201d said Anderson, referring to his former longtime team owner and friend who passed away just before the event. \u201cWe got the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge win and championship last night, tonight we got the pole, and we got a whole lot of bonus points along the way. So far so good, now we just have to keep it going.\u201d

Through five rounds of qualifying, Anderson was exceptional. He was the quickest of the lot in four sessions and swept in a massive 18 bonus points to chomp a big bite in KB Titan Racing teammate Dallas Glenn\u2019s lead in the points. Glenn, the incoming points leader, is now just two marks ahead of Anderson as the battle for the regular season championship comes to a crescendo.

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be either Dallas or myself with that regular season title tomorrow, and we both want it bad,\u201d said Anderson, who will race Mason McGaha in round one. \u201cTo be able to battle like this down to the wire, and to do it at the U.S. Nationals, is really special. It\u2019s a lot of fun, and I think we\u2019re both ready to go the distance on Monday here. We\u2019ll get a good night\u2019s rest tonight, and we\u2019ll wake up tomorrow ready for battle.\u201d

Eliminations at the 71st annual Cornwell Quality Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals are set to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Labor Day Monday at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.<\/p>\n
