Few names in doorslammer drag racing command as much respect as Jon Salemi. A world-renowned crew chief, tuner, and entrepreneur behind Resolution Racing Services, Salemi has built a career rooted in passion, family, and relentless technical evolution.<\/p>\n

In a wide-ranging interview with Kyle Christ on\u00a0Beyond the Laptop<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 a show produced by Straight Line Media \u2013 Salemi opens up about his journey through drag racing, the impact of technology on the sport, and how punk rock shaped his approach to both racing and life.<\/p>\n

Born Into It<\/h3>\n

Salemi\u2019s earliest memories revolve around drag racing. Raised in Buffalo, New York, he credits his older brother Jim \u2013 17 years his senior \u2013 for introducing him to the sport. \u201cThere was always a race car at the house,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI was four years old when I started going to the track. It\u2019s been embedded in my blood ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jon cut his teeth on the most basic of tasks \u2013 checking tire pressure, cleaning parts \u2013 before naturally evolving into more technical roles. \u201cI got into tracking atmospheric conditions, pulling data from the Racepak, and spotting trends,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was just what I loved to do \u2013 trying to figure out why the car did what it did.\u201d<\/p>\n

That curiosity laid the foundation for a tuning career that would take him to the top of Pro Mod and blown alcohol racing.<\/p>\n

From the Bandshell to the Bleachers<\/h3>\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n

Before Resolution Racing Services, Salemi was rocking stages around the world as the drummer and guitarist for influential hardcore band\u00a0Snapcase<\/em>. For nearly 15 years, music was his main pursuit \u2013 but even during tour breaks, he found himself back at the shop or track.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe subculture of punk and the subculture of drag racing are kind of similar,\u201d Salemi said. \u201cTight-knit, passionate, with built-in fan bases. Both gave me chills. Still do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though he ultimately chose racing over a full-time music career, Salemi hasn\u2019t left it behind.\u00a0Snapcase<\/em>\u00a0still performs a handful of shows each year, and a 2026 documentary is in the works chronicling their legacy \u2013 complete with new music.<\/p>\n

The Birth of Resolution<\/h3>\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n

In 2010, after stints working alongside brother Jim at G-Force Race Cars and with Darren Mayer at DMP, Salemi struck out on his own and formed Resolution Racing Services. The business was born out of necessity \u2013 and maturity.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy brother and I were clashing a lot,\u201d he admitted. \u201cWe needed time apart to grow, and Resolution allowed that. Eventually we came back together, stronger than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, Salemi\u2019s enterprise is a three-pronged operation including Resolution, G-Force Race Cars, and MSR Performance \u2013 a collective that builds, tunes, and maintains some of the most competitive Pro Mods in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never worked on a car that wasn\u2019t supercharged,\u201d Salemi said. \u201cBlown alcohol, belt-driven, roots or screw \u2013 that\u2019s our lane. And we\u2019re busy enough staying there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Tech Explosion<\/h3>\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n

Salemi\u2019s tuning career began when computers were barely part of the conversation. Today, they\u2019re the center of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tech has completely changed the game,\u201d Salemi said. \u201cFrom engine and hub dynos to wet flow benches, from CNC machining to shock data \u2013 we\u2019re going a half-second quicker than we were 10 years ago. That\u2019s all because of technology.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s quick to point out that drag racing has benefitted from the trickle-down of innovations from other industries \u2013 and from racers\u2019 own relentless pursuit of optimization.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings we never paid attention to 10 years ago are now the biggest difference makers. Tire technology, traction compounds, 3D modeling, data acquisition \u2013 if you\u2019re not deep into it, you\u2019re falling behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Family First<\/h3>\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n

Despite the high-stakes nature of the sport, Salemi remains grounded by family \u2013 both biological and chosen. His wife, Melanie, is a fierce Pro Mod competitor. His son Evan is quickly becoming a standout tuner in his own right. And the Salemi racing operation remains anchored by longtime collaborators Jim Salemi and Mike Stawicki.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people around us \u2013 Eddie Whelan, Katie Knight, the whole crew \u2013 they\u2019re not coworkers. They\u2019re family,\u201d Jon said. \u201cThis whole thing was built by family, and it\u2019s stayed that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Salemi acknowledges that working so closely with relatives can create tension, but also sees it as a strength. \u201cWe\u2019re tight-knit, and yeah, sometimes we need space. But I wouldn\u2019t have it any other way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Know Your Role<\/h3>\n

As a leader, Salemi\u2019s mantra is simple: know your role and execute.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re not doing your job at the highest level, be willing to take constructive criticism,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s how we operate. Everyone contributes. Everyone is accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

That approach has helped Salemi\u2019s team remain competitive in an era where the margin for error is razor-thin.<\/p>\n

Favorite Tracks & Final Thoughts<\/h3>\n

Salemi closed out the\u00a0Beyond the Laptop<\/em>\u00a0interview by naming a few of his favorite tracks: Galot Motorsports Park, Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Lancaster Dragway near home in Buffalo, Virginia Motorsports Park, and Empire Dragway \u2013 a revitalized Upstate New York strip he credits with helping keep the sport alive locally.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt bred excellence,\u201d he said of Lancaster. \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for that track, we wouldn\u2019t be where we are today.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Salemi looks ahead, he remains just as excited as ever \u2013 not just about ETs or wins, but about the community that makes it all worthwhile.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be able to go home at the end of the day and talk to your wife about racing and raising a family the right way \u2014 that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about.\u201d<\/p>\n
