\u201cI was fine, and then I literally felt like the car was going backwards. And I [made] myself small in the seat and I immediately thought this is not good<\/em>,\u201d shared Hoard. \u201cI knew what was going on.\u201d<\/p>\n The crash left Hoard unconscious for several minutes. \u201cI remember the first impact in the left rear of the car, and then I don\u2019t remember anything after that,\u201d he said. \u201cI was out for about five minutes.\u201d Though sore and recovering from what he believes are post-concussive symptoms, <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m super sore, and if you saw me moving around, I\u2019d look like a 95-year-old dude,\u201d continued Hoard. He also mentioned that the doctors were concerned about a void around his lungs. <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been in a bit of a brain fog this week,\u201d he mentioned after stating he had Googled concussion symptoms. \u201cI have some floaters in my right eye. I went to the eye doctor, and she said there\u2019s some bruising.\u201d<\/p>\n The crash took place during a test pass at an unsanctioned event, but because it occurred at an NHRA-sanctioned facility, Hoard\u2019s car was impounded for evaluation. \u201cThe NHRA has not released it to me yet, so I don\u2019t have any data from it. I would really like to see it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Built by Beilman Fabrication, the Corvette had shown no signs of instability in the 20 passes leading up to the crash. \u201cThis one didn\u2019t show any signs of that,\u201d Hoard explained. \u201cWe were putting some radial boost to this thing, honestly. Surprisingly, on slicks.\u201d<\/p>\n One of the changes for that pass was activating the torque converter lock-up. \u201cThis is the first time I turned on the lockup, and I have a feeling that came on about three seconds in,\u201d said Hoard. \u201cThat probably helped pick the front end up.\u201d<\/p>\n Hoard credited his safety equipment and car construction for being able to walk away.<\/p>\n \u201cAll credit has to go to Beilman Fabrication, who built the car\u2026 the crotch strap, the shoulder straps\u2014everything was perfect. I always crank my straps tight,\u201d he emphasized. \u201cI had a Pro One driving suit, Hans device\u2014all in certification. Just a super well-built car.\u201d<\/p>\n Looking forward, Hoard is unsure whether he\u2019ll rebuild or step back. \u201cThat car is destroyed,\u201d he stated bluntly. \u201cI\u2019m going to step back a little bit. I\u2019ve got a nitrous Fox body that\u2019s a lot of fun to run. It\u2019s less stress, less money.\u201d<\/p>\n While his future in high-horsepower builds is uncertain, Hoard remains a strong advocate for safety and smart decisions in today\u2019s extreme small-tire environment. \u201cWe\u2019re pressing so hard with these cars,\u201d he said. \u201cYou start thinking about how fast these cars are going at small racetracks\u2026 I don\u2019t want to see more of this stuff happen.\u201d<\/p>\n Still, he\u2019s not walking away. \u201cI plan on being behind the wheel.
