2,900 WHP | Limited Drag Radial | Xavier McBride’s Devil Horse



For the past few years the boost camps on the outlaw drag racing scene have been getting the lion’s share of attention with dominating performances. Xavier McBride and his Devil Horse Mustang have been on the frontlines fighting back with a large displacement, nitrous-injected 5.300 bore space powerplant, which was built by Naiser Racing Components. In fact, the team held the Limited Drag Radial record in 2019 and are working hard to get back on top.

There is a many reasons why so many nitrous-powered racers across the many niches of drag racing are switching to a PowerFT ECU and it is mostly based on reliability, a long list of standard features and advanced optional upgrades, and the outstanding customer service. One of the highlights that nitrous-powered racers prefer are the Pro Nitrous controls that come standard in all FuelTech ECUs, which includes the FT600 on McBride’s Devil Horse racecar, as wells as the FT550, FT550 LITE, and FT450.

The PRO Nitrous function has the ability to control up to 6 stages of nitrous injection, set operation thresholds, offer custom timers and delays, complete ignition timing and fuel control, nitrous bottle pressure compensation, and individual cylinder trim.

Beyond the PRO Nitrous functions, the FT600 engine management system has standard features like sequential injection and ignition, O2 closed loop, Data Logger, Delay Box, Boost Controller, and Nitrous Controller. The FT450, FT550, and FT600 ECU units also come with an LCD display and touchscreen, showing real-time data and allowing the user to make adjustments without a PC connection. Additionally, all the PowerFT control units feature AMP SUPERSEAL automotive connectors, accelerometer and gyroscope, and 2 CAN networks. The FT600, FT550, and FT550 LITE are capable of transmission controls with its built-in GearControl. If that isn’t enough, the FuelTech Input Expander is available, providing 24 additional inputs, including 20 analog inputs and 4 VR sensors.

The FT600 and its siblings also offer protections and alerts to help prevent engine problems and maximize performance of your race vehicle. The RPM rev limiter can be accomplished by fuel or ignition cut while the shift light will alert the driver with sound and dashboard alert. The PowerFT ECU can also control an external shift light, if that is the driver’s preferred method of warning. There are safe mode options that limit RPM or shut the engine off and they can be triggered by high or low EGT, O2 closed loop limit, over-boost, over-rev, engine temperature, fuel injector duty cycle, oil pressure, fuel pressure, and differential fuel pressure, as well as other inputs.

There is no shortage of data as the Mustang is equipped with eight WB-O2 Nano sensors, one for each cylinder and they are connected to the ECU via a CAN system. The digital readouts give real-time data while also feeding information to the data logging system. The aforementioned engine protections and limits can interface with these sensors to help prevent engine problems.
