Lyle Barnett Discusses Horrifying Fiery Incident at Alabama International Dragway Night of Fire

By on August 28, 2024

Accomplished Pro Mod competitor Lyle Barnett recently discussed the frightful fire he suffered over the weekend at Night of Fire at Alabama International Dragway on the recent episode of “The Shake and Bake Show.”

The video plays while Barnett walks viewers through what happened when his Scott Tidwell Racing-prepared Pro Mod was engulfed in flames at the finish line. The incident occurred while Barnett and his team were testing the car in preparation for the 70th annual Toyota NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana.

This isn’t Barnett’s first encounter with fire. In 2015, he endured a similar incident that left him with extensive burns, a harrowing experience that nearly claimed his life. But this time, thanks to improved safety measures and his meticulous preparation, Barnett was able to escape with minimal injuries.

Barnett credited his quick escape to muscle memory and routine. “When it comes to getting out of the car in a hurry, it’s something worth practicing,” he advised. Barnett recounted how, during the fire, his actions were almost automatic—reaching for the parachute, throwing the car into neutral, shutting off the engine, and getting out. “It’s just a natural thing,” he said, highlighting the importance of drivers practicing their escape routines regularly.

The importance of high-quality safety gear was also a focal point in Barnett’s recount. He praised his equipment, particularly his Stand 21 suit, which played a crucial role in protecting him during the fire.

Barnett also shared that his chase for a championship in NHRA Pro Mod is over. However, he will fill in for fellow Pro Mod driver Jose Gonzalez in his Q80 Camaro at the U.S. Nationals. Barnett also disclosed that Stan Shelton also offered up his Mustang for Barnett to compete in the remainder of the season.
