With Titles like 11 Fake Fees, to Don’t Say I’m Paying Cash at Car dealerships, and Car Shortage Crisis, and Car Dealer Says Bring the Car Back!… The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. Then we added Cash Buyer Negotiations, and Held Hostage at a Car Dealership, No Haggle One Price Car Dealerships, How Much do Used Car Dealers Pay for Cars?, 10 Things You Should Not Say to Car dealerships, and the Costco Auto Program. We hit all the topics, and we represent Car Buyers, a goal that’s often in direct conflict with Car Dealer goals.
SUGGESTED COMMENT FOR FTC SITE:
The Homework Guy and JD Tomlinson say it best:
Automotive dealership advertising is ridiculously deceptive. Advertised prices often assume a trade-in credit, a finance credit, or maybe some sort of incentive or rebate that usually doesn’t apply. The advertised prices will also not include a ridiculously high amount of add-on’s such as dealer fees, prep fees, market adjustment fees, and/or reconditioning fees. These fees add up to thousands of dollars that are typically NEVER disclosed to the consumer. It’s become a joke.
Most dealerships will not disclose these costs until a customer is on the property, or more often when the customer is sitting in finance ready to sign paperwork. Then the buyer is told, “This is what we charge everybody.” or “it’s already on the car, we can’t take it off.” There is no way for any consumer to actually shop for competitive pricing and compare “apples to apples”.
Furthermore, dealerships will also add in extended service contracts, wheel or rust protection, paint protection, etc.. without telling the customer. They will also add things like a “power pack” or a “bonus pack”, which would include items such as pinstripes, wheel locks, mud flaps, etc… These items will show on an addendum window sticker and my cost the customer thousands of dollars for products that should cost a couple hundred. The dealership will refuse to take off any of these “add-ons”.
Selling cars to the general public has been reduced to a contest of which dealership can effectively lie the best. Thousdands of buyers from all around the country testify to this on The Homework Guy channel. In our current environment, even the most savvy customers are intentionally confused and deceived. It is a terribly unfriendly and unfair marketplace.
I fully support the FTC in passing these regulations. Implement the rule Changes, and PLEASE ignore the attacks from NADA.

These rules need to be passed immediately,Let's all just stop buying Vehicles in August, September and October 2022 to give them a little bit of their own treatment. This would be good
Thanks again for all you do !
In '17 it was time to update my 11yo van. Called the dealer made out the door cash price and as he was saying I CAN'T DO THAT. I butted in and said I got to go. The salesman called next day and said yes to the price Only if I use GMAC Finance, So I put down a big a down payment and paid it off the first payment. They got just over $200.00 interest.
On a side note, This van replaced an identical (work) van 179K on the odometer, between the Crooked dealer service and the fact that this one has had twice the major repairs in 45K, I'm through with this manufacture and will be going elsewhere next replacement & sooner than planed.
Already done
NADA – National Association of Automobile Dealers. No doubt they are not on our side
Submitted comment on proposed rules. Thank you for the update and for sharing info.
Thank you for posting this. I happily commented in favor with the disclaimer of my views are not completely representative of the auto group I work for. As I currently work for a small 3 rooftop auto group who will show our out the door price right on our website by only requiring you to enter your zip code. I’m certain everyone else at my dealership would agree the price you see online should be the same price you see in the finance office. Honest competition will benefit the consumer in the long run not deceptive behavior.
Thank you! It was very informative with all the right kind of info. This is so helpful to mobilize the informed consumers that will ultimately bring fairness for everyone! Great work as usual!
Is there a way to determine if a dealership is honest? Or is there a service out there that will negotiate a purchase for you?
I hope this transfers into the rv and boat dealerships also
Done I signed up
It’s About Damn time we held them and All Buissness In the US accountable!
Including the Untrustworthy legalized Criminal politicians of the United States and now both sides! That’s how you make America great again holding them all responsible for their legalize criminal activities ripping off the very people that supposedly put them in office that they’re supposed to be serving and are ripping us off!
This is great! Now, let's also go after the timeshare industry 😉

Same equipped gladiator 42500 is 46500 out the door In s. Alabama. But same thing in okc 37500 in okc only add tax then 39300 $7200 savings in okc but have to live in ok, tx, ark. But must finance thru them to get the lower cost. But no early pay off fee. So a relative can buy n sell to me from okc save big $
I agree wholeheartedly. Car dealerships have always been scrumptious. Now maybe they will straighten up and fly right.
I've commented.
This is great news if the FTC enforces these rules. Kevin looks like he is doing much better. Hope he has a full recovery.
If I was in charge, I'd set up a federal auto dealer review board with federal "secret buyers". Dealers would face stiff fines for fraudulent activities and face a review of past sales that could lead to further fines. They'd have to get honest or go out of business.
NADA complaining against accountability!
Shared my shady dealer story from last year, and included the redacted sales slip. I really hope someone actually reads those forms.
They want more time to lobby more, plain and simple. The effect on consumers, according to them, would be a bad to at least one party. We know what party that is.
The FTC rules are a great thing for car buyers!
Greedy dealers need to pay for taking advantage of people, the ones that think untouchable will have to be accountable for getting every penny of the customers, things that aren't needed at all is a excuse to get more money of the customers and is disgusting.
Elizabeth is amazing at being inept of emotional connections and reading like a robot
re; cash buyers; dealers get fined up to 100k when they get audited. The vehicle could end up in another country and this is a big problem.
YOU GUYS ARE THE GREATEST
