How fast is the new $50k Nissan Z? — New Z vs Supra vs Mustang Mach-1 — Cammisa's Drag Race Replay

The 2023 Nissan Z has a 400-hp twin-turbo V-6. It’s roughly the same price as the Ford Mustang GT 5.0 and Toyota Supra, so let’s answer the $50,000 question: Which one makes it through the quarter-mile first?

The 2023 Z Sport starts at $41,015 (with destination) but this is the $51,015 Z Performance, which comes with wider tires and a limited-slip differential. It’s likely that the base car will be slower due to the rear-wheel traction differential.

For the first race, with Jason Cammisa’s now-iconic frozen-time slow-mo walkback, we have the 2023 Nissan Z with a 9-speed automatic transmission battling a 10-speed Ford Mustang Mach-1 and an 8-speed Toyota GR Supra 3.0.

Instrumented Testing Results are as follows:
1. 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-1 (automatic)
0-60 mph = 3.8 sec
1/4 mile = 12.1 sec @ 120 mph

2. 2022 Toyota GR Supra 3.0
0-60 mph = 3.8 sec
1/4 mile = 12.1 sec @ 117 mph

3. 2023 Nissan Z (Performance package) (automatic)
0-60 mph = 4.0 sec
1/4 mile = 12.3 sec @ 116 mph

For the second race, we have the 9-speed automatic Z versus the Z 6-speed manual.

Instrumented Testing Results are as follows:
1. 2023 Nissan Z (Performance package) (automatic)
0-60 mph = 4.0 sec
1/4 mile = 12.3 sec @ 116 mph

2. 2023 Nissan Z (Performance package) (6MT)
0-60 mph = 4.3 sec
1/4 mile = 12.8 sec @ 112 mph

And for the bonus round, we have a 2010 Aston Martin V8 Vantage 4.7, which is almost exactly the same size, weight, horsepower, and torque as the New Z.

  1. Honestly I'm surprised by the BMW, I'm now convinced that it's horsepower it's measured at the wheels, otherwise how did it kept up with that big v8?

  2. Toyota has been making a huge change and making cars more for car enthusiasts. From the camry xse, to the supra gr, now the corolla gr.

  3. I dont understand the hate for the supra being a bmw. BMW had always led the "sporty" premium market, the engine is one of the best engines of all time since its first version in the 335i.
    It also looks great.
    Since when, a toyota having bmw parts is bad?

  5. "More quickly" This channel is joke. It's a tie because they crossed the line at the exact same time? When you can clearly see the supra is passed way before the mustang. Then you say it isn't a tie because the mistang was going 3 mph fatser. Which is not the case the supra woukd is clearly the one going faster. Did you get the cars confused?

  6. I really like the rear of the new Z car. It actually looks a lot like the Mustang, which has classic good looks. The front is sort of meh though. Looks like something that's trying to look like an old Porsche, but not in a good way. Good to see Nissan keep the Z going and finally boosting it though. That's all that car ever needed to bring it into the 21st century.

  7. the new Z is the ugliest POS Japan has put out in a long while. And its slow? I cant imagine tires are enough to change this but we shall see. As it stands the car is hideous and over priced for what it is. Not that the Supra is any better

  8. It's nice how it's been slowed down and properly commented, but i think that the normal shots, like the drag race itself, are looking too unreal, it looks way too cinematic or almost like the next gen video game…

  9. for the money, these should be spanking ANY mustang and should be a drivers race with the supra. 400 was the benchmark 10 years ago. come on nissan step it up a bit. 470bhp should have been the minimum out the door. a V8 mustang can be had 10k less. sad.

  10. I love that Z. Looks great. Hopefully they’ll carve it up to look a little leaner during an eventual model refresh. These new 8-10 speed gearboxes let these cars jump off the line and stay in their powerbands longer. Gotta love the new technology. I don’t care that it’s a slower. I love the new Z.

  11. Mustang is the best option 😂 it’s a 6 speed and still ran them down. Plus the motor is the best option to build from and the cheapest 4 cams 4 valves per cylinder and forged internals from factory capability of holding 1000hp stock block so u could throw on a tt kit and not even have to open up the block and make a 800whp safely on stock and has ran 8s 1/4 times with a sealed block. Z 400 shouldn’t even be 50k at most 30k for this performance.

  12. I have a 370z and let's be honest here it looks way better than the new Z but it will win against my 3.7l. that's why I'm swapping a LS LQ4 V8 engine. Swapped my differential to 4.36 gear and has a wave track LSD. Got the engine kit from sikky can't wait. Oh and the LQ4 can handle almost 1500hp stock internals with cam swap and should have around 500hp and almost 500 tq stock engine no turbos. The sikky oil pan come already for twin turbo setup.

  13. People used to love the old Supras because they was so over-engineered from the factory, that you could add tons of HP with few supporting mods. Just wanted to point out that Ford seems to have taken a page out of Toyota's old playbook more than BMW did when developing the new Supra. The Mach 1 has a $7k procharger that can be dropped in with ZERO supporting mods bringing it up to 740+ HP. Having worked on cars my whole life I am surprised that more people aren't talking about that. Seriously, it even comes with the tune. I have spent way more for way less and always had to sweat a little waiting for the next weak link in the chain to break. Meanwhile this car is 7k away from being a GT500 with an optional manual transmission.
