Traditionally, the second stop on the IHRA tour came to Rockingham, NC., for the Pro-Am Nationals. The IHRA was continuing to move forward without Winston’s sponsorship; a major deal the Bristol, Tenn.-based organization had brought to drag racing and shared with NHRA.
The 1987 season was one to remember with Top Fuel cars returning after a three-year hiatus, and the emergence of Roy Hill as a championship contender.
