I scored this Dakine tailgate pad in the local classifieds for $20. Since I test a lot of different trucks, and do a lot of mountain biking, I wanted a tailgate pad to be able to use each different truck to haul my bike. The pad is a size large, which is typically meant for full-size trucks, but the previous owners had cut off the corners to fit an Escalade EXT. Coincidentally, this allows it to now fit midsize trucks like the 2020 Honda Ridgeline as well.
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that the Ridgeline includes a clever lockable storage compartment under the bed, which is great for hauling your helmet, pack, gloves, and tools when you go out for a ride. The other day I made a video that demonstrates the functionality of this storage compartment, along with the two different ways you can open the tailgate. Check it out here:
The tailgate pad is an older version of this one:
The bike is a 2017 Santa Cruz Bronson, size large frame.

Can't you just remove the front wheel and then fit the bike in the bed?
I have a 17 Ridgeline, with a cap on it. Im able to fit my mountain bike to lay flat (not drive side down of course) in the bed perfectly. (with dropper seat all the way in) bike is a 18 Giant trance L for size reference. Quick way to get the bike in the back if you don't have a tail gate cover. Depending on the geo of bike anyway. Thanks for the vid, now i'm looking for a cheapo used tail gate cover in case im with a buddy.
Just fold up your back seats and throw your bike there. I'm able to fit my fairly large bike there without having to take off the front wheel.
Hey Chris – thanks for the good video! I was just looking at doing the same – do you think the ridgeline will handle 5 bikes using the approach in your video?
Unfortunately, according to Dakine's website, the Dakine Pickup Pad DLX model, the only pad they sell, is NOT compatible with the Ridgeline. In the chart there are nothing but X's . Just a reminder to check before ordering. But I love this concept!

It'd be easier to install I'd you swung the gate rather than tipping it down.
Does the bottom of the tire hit the bumper? Thanks
Thank you for filming!
Funny, I just picked up the very same pad used for my Ridgeline and am about to trim it similar to yours to make the large pad fit. Happy I scored one used so I don't feel bad about taking the scissors to it. I'm planning to sew up the cut edges closed again is all (well, contract that part out to the GF)
Wish I could see how close the nut on the front wheel hub is to the unprotected part of the tailgate. Could see a chip/dent happening there.
I can get two road bikes in with this method, but I use a folded beach towel.
I have a large Thule and a medium fox pad for my 22 Ridgeline and U had the same problem with the Thule that’s why I bought the fox but the fox I feel like it’s too small 😂😂
Dude, you are slightly mis informed. The Honda Ridgeline is unique, it is the only truck with a "Fiberglass Bed". Never drop the tailgate, open it and enjoy it. Easily open it down with handle, or to the left with under hidden release handle. Also the hidden locking in bed storage is the best on the market. Many are trying to copy it. For moving bikes, get a bike rack, THULE makes the best, it fits right into the tow bar. Takes under 1 minute then locks up to 4 bikes, cable lock included. That bike pad will leave your truck covered in scratches with repeated use. The truck also has true wishbone suspension and the best V6 engine you can get. POW, you are learning grasshopper.
I dented my 1st gen honda ridgeline's taigate by literally nuding into a shopping cart while reversing. Put a nice black mark and a visible dent into the relatively hollowed out tailgate body paneling. I would try one of these mats but I have some serious concerns it would damage my tailage. Also not mentioned – I don't think they're approopriate for even a 58lb ebike correct?
