Welcome to Buckley’s Auto Care Replacing brake pads? Doing a “brake job”. Well, it’s most important to have all of your brake pad hardware replaced at the same time. Why? Typically, the hardware consists of anti-rattle clips, caliper slide pins, pad springs and on some applications, wear indicators. All of these pieces allow the pads that are being pushed together by the caliper pistons to ride smoothly across the sides of the caliper in order for them not to bind in any direction.
Before you add on any brake hardware, clips, etc., you must clean the contact areas of the caliper, then set the hardware in place. After setting in place, apply specific brake caliper lube (able to handle heat) to all pad to hardware contact points. Once that is completed, set the pads in the appropriate positions.
Remember, periodic cleaning and lubrication is recommended during the lifespan of brake systems. From cleaning and re-lubricating caliper hardware to flushing the old brake fluid out, a good braking system requires a little TLC every once in a while.
